Top Cardiac Surgery Hospitals in China: A Complete Guide

Core Positioning

China is a global cardiac surgery heavyweight. Its annual cardiac surgery volume is second only to the United States. Surgery for complex congenital heart disease is world-leading, and Fuwai Hospital has one of the world’s largest congenital heart surgery volumes. Large CABG centers can match European and U.S. quality. Costs are only about 10% to 20% of U.S. prices. The challenge is concentration: roughly 90% of top cardiac surgery resources are concentrated in fewer than 20 hospitals.

The Four Top National Cardiac Surgery Centers

Fuwai Hospital, Beijing

Fuwai is the temple of Chinese cardiac surgery. It performs more than 4,000 CABG procedures and more than 5,000 congenital heart disease operations annually, making it one of the world’s largest centers. It is especially strong in CABG, complex congenital heart disease, and heart transplantation. It has an international department for foreign patients. Appointments are extremely hard to secure, often requiring two to four weeks in advance, and the environment is crowded. CABG may cost about CNY 80,000 to 150,000; valve surgery about CNY 100,000 to 180,000.

Anzhen Hospital, Beijing

Anzhen is a global benchmark for great-vessel surgery. It performs more than 12,000 heart surgeries annually, ranking near the top nationally. It is the birthplace of Sun’s Procedure and a global leader in acute type A aortic dissection rescue. Aortic surgery may cost about CNY 100,000 to 200,000.

Zhongshan Hospital, Shanghai

Zhongshan is East China’s leading cardiac surgery center. It is strong in transplantation, TAVR, Da Vinci robotic surgery, and ECMO. Its international department offers some of the best English service among public hospitals, making it a first-choice recommendation for many foreign patients. CABG may cost about CNY 80,000 to 120,000; valve surgery about CNY 80,000 to 150,000.

Wuhan Union Hospital

Wuhan Union is Central China’s cardiac surgery powerhouse, with more than 8,000 surgeries annually. It is strong in congenital heart disease and heart transplantation. Costs are slightly lower than Beijing and Shanghai, with CABG often around CNY 60,000 to 120,000.

Regional Pillars

  • Northeast China: First Hospital of China Medical University in Shenyang; Second Hospital of Harbin Medical University; Coronary artery disease and great-vessel surgery
  • East China: Ruijin Hospital, First Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University, Nanjing Drum Tower Hospital; Minimally invasive surgery and coronary care
  • South China: Guangdong Provincial People’s Hospital and First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University; South China’s largest cardiac care cluster
  • West China: West China Hospital and Xijing Hospital; Western China’s leading centers
  • Central China: Second Xiangya Hospital; Congenital heart disease and valve disease

Hospital Selection by Condition

  • Condition: First Choice
  • Complex CABG: Fuwai, then Anzhen, then Zhongshan
  • Aortic dissection and great-vessel disease: Anzhen, then Fuwai
  • Pediatric complex congenital heart disease: Fuwai, then Wuhan Union, then West China
  • Heart transplantation: Fuwai, then Zhongshan, then Wuhan Union
  • TAVR for older patients without open surgery: Fuwai, then Zhongshan, then Anzhen
  • Minimally invasive or atrial fibrillation surgery: Zhongshan, then Ruijin, then Fuwai
  • Combined coronary and valve surgery: Fuwai, then Anzhen, then Zhongshan
  • Foreign patients: Zhongshan in Shanghai, or United Family with invited public-hospital specialists

Common Self-Pay Surgery Costs

  • CABG: CNY 60,000 to 150,000; 7 to 14 days
  • Valve replacement: CNY 80,000 to 180,000; 7 to 14 days
  • TAVR: CNY 150,000 to 300,000; 3 to 7 days
  • Aortic dissection surgery: CNY 100,000 to 250,000; 14 to 30 days
  • Tetralogy of Fallot in children: CNY 50,000 to 120,000; 7 to 21 days
  • Heart transplantation: CNY 200,000 to 500,000; 30 to 60 days
  • Maze procedure for atrial fibrillation: CNY 50,000 to 100,000; 5 to 7 days

For comparison, CABG in the United States may cost USD 75,000 to 150,000, or about CNY 550,000 to 1.1 million. China can be about one-tenth of that cost.

Full Advantage and Risk Analysis

Advantages include large surgical volume, rapid experience accumulation, internationally recognized Chinese-origin techniques such as Sun’s Procedure, major price reductions for domestic consumables, and an absolute cost advantage. Risks include top resources being concentrated in Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou; short effective communication time between doctors and patients; weaker postoperative cardiac rehabilitation compared with Europe and the United States; possible overtreatment; and language barriers for foreign patients because daily nursing English is limited.

A Smart Pathway for Foreign Patients

The best model is often an international hospital plus a public-hospital specialist. Contact United Family, Jiahui, or another international hospital through its international patient center, and ask whether it can invite Fuwai, Anzhen, or Zhongshan specialists for consultation and surgery. This can provide English communication, a better inpatient environment, and direct billing through insurers such as Cigna, AXA, and Bupa. Costs are higher but more predictable depending on insurance coverage. Going directly to a public hospital international department is also possible at Fuwai, Anzhen, or Zhongshan, but daily nursing English may be limited. A medical interpreter is recommended.

Frontier Technologies in 2026

TAVR exceeds 20,000 cases annually nationwide, with indications expanding to patients aged 60 and above. Da Vinci robotic cardiac surgery is routinely performed at Zhongshan and the 301 Hospital. Fuwai leads in total arterial revascularization CABG. Anzhen is strong in hybrid operating rooms. Domestic LVAD products such as Yongrenxin have entered the market. Fuwai uses 3D printing for preoperative simulation in complex congenital heart disease.

One-Sentence Summary

China’s top hospitals can perform complex cardiac surgery and do it well, but the key is choosing the right doctor and hospital. Around 90% of top cardiac surgery resources are concentrated in fewer than 20 hospitals. Costs may be about one-tenth of U.S. prices, and quality is competitive in selected fields. Foreign patients should consider the route of an international hospital, such as United Family, inviting Fuwai or Anzhen specialists for consultation and surgery.
